I spoke a little bit about SEO on my blog recently. What tips do you have for defining metrics to help increasing ROI on web marketing spends?

Cool, I’ll have to stop by tomorrow.
As for your question, I’d just make sure your metrics measure ROI as its connected to profits - not sales. $1000 in sales with $800 spent in marketing could still mean you’re out of pocket, whereas real profit is the real show.
Also, make sure you measure the source at the POS, a lot of purchases that I’m seeing on one of our sites at the moment are from direct visits but at POS they’re claiming they’re visitors from search. It’s very telling about visitor behavior too.
