I just received an email about a new development coming to MyBlogLog. This is also in line with a project that I’m working on at the moment - my mouth is sealed on that one though.
Basically, MyBlogLog is looking to combine all the personal data from your social networking profiles into one easily accessible site. No longer will you have to remember 20 different sites to login to, to check.
That’s the big problem with these social networks these days, there are so many of them, it’s hard to keep up. It seems like converging these networks and making use of RSS, XML and other data formats is really going to be the future of the web.
As for this small project I’m working on which is along similar lines as this, you can expect to see it within the next week or two.

I don’t think it got worse, it just didn’t change at all.
I reckon this recent spur of innovation was incited by Microsoft’s hostile bid and Google Social Graph. The recent downsizing they’re doing could have made the MyBlogLog team step their game up and pull out some new tricks such as this.

This is nothing new, 8hands has been around for a while and does this.
It is a downloadable, but does the same thing. I’m sure they’ll be hot on MyBlogLog’s heals, for an online version, once MBL releases theirs.

I’m surprised that this hasn’t been done sooner. All the data out there is becoming portable as they release it in XML. Last.fm feeds, Twitter Feeds, blog feeds and more can all add up and create value for people who want to just visit a single place.
What I’d be keen to see is an iGoogle page where you can add all your social networking sites automatically and have it recognise your profiles based on XFN/FOAF relationships.
Just need to have people use these formats more.

Hey Rob, that sounds great. They are so many social networking sites out there I stopped joining after like the 5th, to much to keep up with. Thanks for sharing.

What will happen to all these
social media sites?

Personally, I think that they’ll open up and share data. Think RSS feeds for your social networking profiles that contain your user information which you choose to share with other sites.
Have a look into Google’s Open Social. That’s going to open the opportunity for more websites to compete on a more level playing field.
When this happens, I guess the most popular social networking sites won’t always be the ones with the most users but those offering the best user experience. Surely MySpace and Facebook will remain kings but at the end of the day the sites offerening the best user experience/branding/USP will probably come out on top.
