Hot off the Press. I was checking my AdSense Earnings for today and I noticed that Google has suddenly changed it’s FavIcon. Check it out here:
This looks to me like Google is trying to send a softer image. Instead of the capitalised ‘G’, the lower case ‘g’ seems a little less imposing and suggests they’re moving to allay concerns that the company is a large monopoly.
So far it seems the only services with the new favicon are AdSense and Webmaster Tools. AdWords and iGoogle still keep the old favicon showing proudly in your Tabs and Address bar. Here it is…
What do you think? Does this signal a modernisation, update or something else for the big ‘G’ brand?

I noticed this a few days ago on by searches, your brand related observations are extremely good. It definitely stands out in my mozilla browser as well.

Cheers. I have to admit, I didn’t like the new favicon at first but after staring at it for a while it’s really grown on me. I like the transparency in the icon - classy.

They change the icon’s background blend with the background. In address bar it is white.
If we change setting of our desktop appearance I wonder is the background is still transparent.

I’d say so - I guess it depends on what sort of transparency they’re using. Is it additive, blending or something else?
I wonder if they’ll switch the rest over. I mean they can’t really have two different Favicons for too long - that will confuse users about the Google brand.

It has happened many days ago but I don’t like their new favicon.

Big “G” became small “g”. I don’t like it. the new icon is not as standing out as the old one and with multiple tabs it is worse this way.

Hey Nikolah,
Sucks to hear about your Google slap. I got slapped as well - from a PR 4 to PR 3. There’s no telling what will happen to my PR next update, as I’ve made the move to my new domain name…
PS. Your FLV player got me back into watching my old Stompernet vids.
